A group of nine interns with the Sarajevo Post Conflict Research Centre (PCRC) visited the ICTY Field Office in Sarajevo as part of a programme focusing on the work of the most relevant institutions and organisations in the field of transitional justice in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH).
The ICTY representative in BiH, Almir Alić, introduced the guests from the UK, US, Canada, Denmark, Germany and BiH to war crimes trials held before the ICTY, as well as the ICTY’s legacy and its contribution to strengthening judicial institutions in the region that deal with crimes committed during the wars of the 1990s. The PCRC interns were particularly keen to learn more about the establishment of the ICTY as the first international war crimes tribunal since the Nuremberg and Tokyo tribunals. The ICTY representative clarified that this was the first war crimes tribunal established by the United Nations (UN), after the Security Council unanimously passed a resolution pursuant to Chapter VII of the UN Charter.
The PCRC interns expressed hope that the judgments in the remaining cases before the ICTY will further contribute to the legacy that the Tribunal will leave behind.
