Twenty-six final year students from the ‘Lovro Monti’ high-school in the Croatian town of Knin today gathered to listen to Outreach representative Klara Dokmanović talk about the work and achievements of the ICTY.
The students recognised the importance of the Tribunal’s achievement in dismantling the tradition of impunity for war crimes and the importance of individual criminal responsibility for perpetrators regardless of their official position. One student suggested that, without the Tribunal, no one would have investigated war crimes, or if they had, the trials would not have been unbiased. Another suggested that establishing the facts, acknowledging the crimes that had been committed and assuming responsibility for them was the only path to post-war reconciliation.
The teacher and librarian who attended the event were full of praise for the presentation, saying that they believed it was important for the students to be exposed to such information.
