As the Tribunal prepares to close down at the end of 2017, the ICTY is seeking to ensure that its work and achievements remain accessible and meaningful, both for people in the region of the former Yugoslavia and worldwide. To this purpose, a series of public events pertaining to the ICTY’s Legacy has been organised since mid-2016, and will continue to be held in the course of 2017.

These events, labelled the ICTY Legacy Dialogues, aim to ensure that the Tribunal’s contribution to accountability for international crimes will endure after the ICTY has closed its doors, in particular by enabling others to build on the work and achievements of the Tribunal.

The ICTY Legacy Dialogues series kicked off in June 2016 with the release of the research report ‘Echoes of Testimonies: A Pilot Study into the long-term impact of bearing witness before the ICTY’. It continued in July with the English-language premiere of the documentary ‘Crimes before the ICTY – Višegrad’, and then in October with the launch of the publication ‘Fifteen Years of Outreach at the ICTY’.

The main events to be held during 2017 will include a legacy conference in Sarajevo, scheduled for 22-24 June 2017, an event in New York and a symposium and a formal closing ceremony, which will be held in The Hague in December. Other, smaller events to be held throughout the year as part of the series will include documentary screenings, workshops and panel discussions. Representatives of all three ICTY organs  - Chambers, the Registry and the Office of the Prosecutor, as well as the Association of Defence Counsel, government and judiciary officials, policy makers and high level experts from all over the world will participate in the discussions. These encounters are designed as dynamic, interactive dialogues that represent a unique opportunity to discuss the Tribunal's jurisprudence, procedure and practice.
