| ICTY Weekly Press Briefing
 Date: 15.11.2006
 Time: 12:00

 Registry and Chambers:
Refik Hodžić, Spokesman for Registry and Chambers, madethe following statement:

The Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina yesterday sentenced RadovanStanković to 16 years’ imprisonment for rapes and other crimes
against humanity committed in the Bosnian town of Foča in
1992. Stanković was the first ICTY indictee whose case was
transferred to a national court as part of Tribunal’s completion
strategy, under the Rule 11bis. Today's judgement justifies
the Tribunal's strategy of transferring cases, expertise and know-how
to the judiciaries in the region, and particularly Bosnia and
 Herzegovina.

The Tribunal is dedicated to assisting local courts in conductingwar crimes trials in accordance with international standards of
fair trial and remains committed to supporting fair trials for
the perpetrators of atrocities committed during the conflicts
in the former Yugoslavia. The ICTY hopes the judiciary of Bosnia
and Herzegovina can complement the work of the Tribunal in providing
justice and trying perpetrators that will not be tried in The
 Hague.

 Questions:

Asked to confirm that VojislavŠešelj was refusing to take food offered to him by Detention Unit
(DU) staff, Hodžić stated that this was indeed the case.

In answer to a question about the arrangementsfor visits by family members to Šešelj, Hodžić pointed out
that the DU had two types of visits to detainees: privileged visits
by defence counsel and consular staff which are sight-monitored
only, and visits by friends and family which the DU management
could monitor in sight and hearing if it saw fit to do so. He
added that in the case of Šešelj, the DU management took the decision
to monitor visits by his family and friends in both sight and
hearing. Hodžić also made it emphatically clear that it was
untrue that Šešelj had been prevented from seeing his family and
friends as had been reported in some media.

In response to a question as towhether Šešelj’s medical condition was being monitored and whether
he was eating food provided from other sources, Hodžić answered
that there were mechanisms in the DU to monitor every detainee’s
health and that Šešelj’s health was being monitored. Hodžić
had no comment as to whether Šešelj was eating food obtained from
 another source.

Asked whether Šešelj was refusingmedicine and what type of medicine he was receiving, Hodžić
replied that that information regarding what medicine he was taking
was confidential information to protect the privacy of detainees
and that he therefore had no comment. He added that nothing had
been observed which would indicate that Šešelj’s health was deteriorating.

Asked what the impact of Šešelj’scurrent actions would be on the start of the trial, Hodžić
made it clear that only matters that were inside the scope of
the Rules of Procedure and Evidence and the Statute could have
any impact on Tribunal procedures. He added that at present there
was a scheduling order for the trial to begin on 27 November.
It was up to The Trial Chamber to bring changes to that if it
 saw fit.

Nikiforov added that, althoughit was not connected to Šešelj’s refusal to take food, the Prosecution
had dropped its objections to his family visits. He reiterated
that this decision been taken before Šešelj’s decision to refuse
 food offered by DU staff.

A journalist asked for clarityas to what the problem was with registering Šešelj’s legal advisors:
whether it was that Šešelj had not filed a list, or that they
did not qualify to receive legal status. Hodžić responded
that the people named on the list provided by Šešelj did not qualify
under Rule 44 of the Tribunal’s Rules of Procedure and Evidence.
He stated that the privileges that were requested, for example
privileged access to Šešelj or access to confidential documents,
were only afforded to people who qualified under Rule 44 and could
be bound by the Code of Professional Conduct. In order to receive
these privileges, legal advisers had to meet the criteria.
